Abstract

RODRIGUEZ RODRIGUEZ, Beatriz; RODRIGUEZ RODRIGUEZ, Violeta  and  FERNANDEZ GOMEZ, Yuri. Prevalence of visual disability caused by diabetic retinopathy, a challenge to all. Rev Cubana Oftalmol [online]. 2017, vol.30, n.3, pp. 1-8. ISSN 1561-3070.

The diabetes is one of the largest health emergencies worldwide since their associated complications require special attention. The diabetic retinopathy is one of these focuses of attention and the diabetes-related visual impairment becomes a challenge for all. We analyzed the main barriers to early diagnosis and timely treatment of the retinopathy. Additionally, we also made considerations on the screening method of the diabetic retinopathy in Cuba and the value of education of patients, family and of all individuals in general to fight this epidemic that grows and is out of control. Education, detection and treatment programs for diabetic retinopathy to prevent the visual impairment from this cause were developed.

Keywords : prevention; diabetic retinopathy; visual impairment; education.
