Abstract

With the aim of identifying some problems existing in connection with the attention to the diabetic in a health ares of the municipality of Diez de Octubre, 225 diabetics aged 15 or over who were registerd up to December 31, 1993, (sampling error, 6 % and reliability, 95 %) were selected at random. A questionnarie was used to collect general data about the disease and from the medical histories. 87 % of the individuals visited the family physician's office habitually; 83 % were satisfied with the health services, and 15 % expressed having dificulties in obtaining attention for their diseases. 68 % received courses of instructions on diabetes mellitus. Of them, only 10 % through the family physician and nurse. 68 % were never examined with an ophthalmoscope, 56 % never had an examination of their feet, and only 43 % received the results of glycosuria. It was concluded that the national programme for diabetes is not accoplished in this area.
