ASTRAIN RODRIGUEZ, María Elena; MARTINEZ RODRIGUEZ, Vicente y ARTILES BISVAL, Leticia. Indicador sintético para medir diferencias de género. Rev Cubana Salud Pública [online]. 1999, vol.25, n.1, pp. 54-63. ISSN 1561-3127.
A techonological study to identify variables that indicate gender differences in our environment and to build a synthetic indicator capable of measuring such differences in the territories was undertaken. Following experts´ opinion, three areas with high, medium and low socio-economic levels in the Playa, Marianao and La Lisa municipalities respectively were chosen. 171 persons were surveyed - 130 males and 141 females for identifying the variables, qualitative (nominal group) and quantitative (discriminating factor analysis) techniques were employed. As a result of the study, the variables that best point gender differences in our environment were household chores, job, health and rest time in working days. An indicator was designed which recorded gender gaps by means of the differences in obtained values per territory in relation to the best value. The effectiveness of this indicator was proved since different results were found for high and medium socioeconomic level territories in comparison with the low level one.
