TORRES PAEZ, María Luisa  and  ASTRAIN RODRIGUEZ, María E. Morbilidad y mortalidad de los ancianos en el municipio Habana Vieja (1994-1996). Rev Cubana Salud Pública [online]. 1999, vol.25, n.2, pp.143-153. ISSN 0864-3466.

Changes occured in the structured by ages of the population of the country and of the Havana Vieja municipality and the rise in the number of elderly and its natural proportion gave rise to a crosswise descriptive study carried out from 1994 to 1996 which allowed to find out the performance of morbidity and mortality of this age group. The level of mortality was determined by triennal rates and avoidability criteria whereas premature mortality was determined by standar-adjusted life years lost. The mosbidity was analyzed from triennal rates of some diseases of compulsory notification and the classified non-communicable chronic diseases. The obtained results showed the prevalence of deaths caused by non-communicable diseases and an excessive male mortality for all diseases except for cerebro-vascular diseases, diabetes mellitus and accidents that accounted for a higher risk in older females. Premature mortality was significant in the three first causes of death, and also in influenza, pneumonia and liver cirrhosis for man and in diabetes mellitus and accidents for women.
