Abstract

ALVAREZ VAZQUEZ, Luisa; CALERO RICARDO, Jorge Luis  and  LEON DIAZ, Esther María. Sexual and reproductive health from the male's point of view. Rev Cubana Salud Pública [online]. 2006, vol.32, n.1. ISSN 0864-3466.

This study on sexuality and reproduction from the male's point of view is topical at the present time. The knowledge acquired in this area is still insufficient in the world, in Latin America, and specially in Cuba . This study is part of a multinational study conducted in the most urbanized areas of Argentina , Bolivia , Peru and Cuba among males aged 20-29. 8 focal groups were considered in our country and a survey was done with a representative sample from Havana City. The perceptions, behaviors and the factors that were related to the topic were the objectives. Most ot the surveyed were born or brought up in the capital. There was a predominace of those who had sexually initiated in the early adolescence with methods of male control. The negotiation on the protection took place in the initiation in a few cases. It was demonstrated the existance of perceptions of male's power as regards the decision making at the time of having sexual relations, but there were contradictions as to the methods they said they used and those that are used in the country. It was found that in the negotiation on protection by conversation, only a part talks about it, and it is associated with the type of method they referred having used. When they talk, it prevailed the male's opinion, but when they do not talk about it, only a few identiify the use of something for protection, which allows to consider that male's information understimates the use of contraception
