Abstract

HERRERA LEON, Lorenzo I. Fetal survival in Cuba. Rev Cubana Salud Pública [online]. 2006, vol.32, n.1. ISSN 0864-3466.

The present paper approaches the study of pregnancy as a process of change of states with three basic stages: entry, permanence and exit. This process, is assimilated by a survival study, in which the permanence is identical to the survival function of the life table. By virtue of this particular similarity, estimations of the vital risks (fetal death, live birth), as well as of the permanence function, according to gestational age in the initial, intermediate and final years of the period 1989-1997, are made. It was concluded that the progress experienced in fetal survival was modest, in spite of the fact that it was positive. Some important differentials in fetal survival were also identified by attributes such as age of the pregnant woman, previous history of pregnancies (number of deliveries, abortions, still births), and the weight of the product of conception

Keywords : Sexual and reproductive health; fetal survival; risks; differentials; Cuba.
