Abstract

Rev Cubana Salud Pública [online]. 2006, vol.32, n.1. ISSN 0864-3466.

An analysis of the follow-up of the International Conference on Population and Development, held in Cairo (ICPD, 1994), and of the Fourth World Conference on Women, held in Beijing, China, in 1995, was made. It was found that in spite of the important advances attained in the accomplishment of their agendas, the situation of women's rights in general and of the reproductive rights (RR) and the sexual rights (SR) in Latin America , is in a political setting that endangers what has been achieved so far and rather tends to delay or weaken its implementation. The objective of this article is to stress some of the points that turn into challenges for the women's movement in general and for the public policy makers, who instead of supporting legislative and politically women's rights, as it appears in the public agendas, limit themselves to the speech and to formal decisions that subsist in the paper, but that are not translated into the necessary action to attain the gender equity stated by the protagonic linking agencies, mainly by those corresponding to the UN system

Keywords : Sexual health; reproductive health; gender.
