Abstract

LOPEZ, Michel Alpízar; PEREZ HOZ, Grisell  and  GARCIA HERNANDEZ, Ignacio. Preventing alcoholism. Rev Cubana Salud Pública [online]. 2008, vol.34, n.3, pp. 0-0. ISSN 1561-3127.

Among the scourges of mankind, in addition to wars, famines, extreme misery and natural disasters, are drugs that cause the death of thousands of persons every day. According to the reports of the UN Program for International Drug Control, over 50 % of crimes and violent deaths worldwide are related in one way or another with drug addiction. The fact that everybody has ever taken some kind of drug does not mean that we are drug addicts. Regarding addictions, we dealt with alcoholism in this paper since excessive and irresponsible alcohol consumption is a risk factor in the occurrence of chronic diseases and also brings about awful individual, economic and social consequences. The present situation of this health problem demands an interdisciplinary and inter-institutional work. The paper makes an appeal for concerted prevention of this scourge.

Keywords : Drugs; alcoholism; prevention.
