Abstract

"Miracle Mission" designed as a solidarity campaign in the ophthalmologic field for all the Latin American and Caribbean peoples, emerged at the initiative of Cuba with the support of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela. The factors that encouraged this mission were analyzed, and its effects on the Latin American visual health from the assistance, teaching and research viewpoints were also stressed. This social program has brought about many benefits: to prevent and to treat the main causes of blindness; to increase the formation of human resources using high technology for quality and efficiency; and to promote the research process aimed at the primary health care fundamentally.
