Abstract

SANCHEZ FRENES, Pedro; ROJO PEREZ, Nereida; PEREZ ULLOA, Luis Enrique  and  HERNANDEZ MALPICA, Sara. Looking at the situation of the worldwide blood and blood products availability. Rev Cubana Salud Pública [online]. 2017, vol.43, n.3, pp. 1-7. ISSN 0864-3466.

Blood transfusion and blood products are a proven effective therapeutic method when they are timely used in specific medical situations, hence their safe and universal access is an essential service within health coverage. A review of documentary sources was made to find out the current availability of these biological products in various regions of the world and in Cuba, which is the objective of this paper. It was proven that the developed countries, with well-structured health systems and transfusion services based on voluntary blood donation, generally have better availability to meet their transfusion needs than the developing countries. Although Cuba has attained the main targets recommended by the World Health Organization for the national blood transfusion programs, it faces significant threats that could endanger the continuity of these achievements.

Keywords : Blood availability; Blood Transfusion Program.
