CASTANEDA ABASCAL, Ileana Elena and HERNANDEZ CHIGUIL DE VAIDES, Juana Marta. Maternal mortality in Alta Verapaz, Guatemala, 2010 - 2018. Rev Cubana Salud Pública [online]. 2022, vol.48, n.1 Epub Mar 25, 2022. ISSN 1561-3127.
Introduction:
In Alta Verapaz efforts have been made to reduce deaths from causes related to pregnancy, childbirth and puerperium period, however, they have not been enough.
Objective:
Describe the behavior of maternal mortality in Alta Verapaz between 2010 and 2018.
Methods: A time series analysis of the department, sub-departmental regions and municipalities was performed using moving averages and the percentage differences in the overall maternal mortality ratios between the territories were calculated.
Results:
The sub-departmental regions III and V were the ones with the highest relative frequency. The trend of the risk of dying was slightly downward at the expense of the following municipalities : Cobán, San Pedro Carcha, Lanquín, Tucurú, Panzós, Chacal, Fray Bartolomé de las Casas and Raxruhá, which was reflected in the sub-departmental regions.
Conclusions:
There was not much variety in maternal mortality in Alta Verapaz in the study period despite the efforts made, which shows the need to review the health policies and strategies developed in search of more effective alternatives that contribute to the reduction of deaths of pregnant and post-partum women.
