Abstract

DUARTE, Leticia et al. BIOLOGY AND LIFE TABLE OF Myzus persicae (SULZER) (HEMIPTERA: APHIDIDAE) UNDER LABORATORY CONDITIONS. Rev. Protección Veg. [online]. 2011, vol.26, n.1, pp. 1-4. ISSN 2224-4697.

The aphid problem has become a limiting factor for the optimal development of horticultural crops, particularly in the cruciferous vegetables among the most affected. Myzus persicae (Sulzer), known as the peach tree green aphid, is a polyphage species found among the most harmful aphid species associated with vegetables such as cabbage, beet and cauliflower. The present work is aimed at determining the main biological and population parameters of this species on Beta vulgaris var. cicla (L.) under laboratory conditions, at the temperature of 24.5 ± 0.28 oC and 66.6 ± 9.2 % of relative humidity. In 40 nymphs obtained from adult females, the molting times, the time of reaching the adult stage, the descendant by female and the adult death date, were evaluated. The duration of the nymphal period ranged from 4 to 5 days while the average life longevity was 16, 3 days, M. persicae reaching a life cycle of 20.6 days on average. The daily fecundity of the species was 3 to 4 individuals by female and the survival describes a curve of the type I and II. The population parameters of the species, intrinsic rate of increase (rm), net reproductive rate (Ro), generation time (T) and duplication time (D) were 0.04, 16.0, 2.73 and 7.53 respectively.
