The evolution of metric information disciplines, up to their insertion in the digital environment is examined. Some of the characteristics of Internet, the World Wide Web and the scientific communication in the Web that enable such insertion are undertaken. Some of the main applications of the cybermetric and webmetric studies are analyzed, from the use of private indicators, and their relation with those employed in traditional metric information studies is analyzed
