Abstract

The behavior of the production of scientific articles published in the national biomedical journals by health professionals in Camagüey province from 1996 to 2007 is evaluated. More than 85 % of the professionals published their contributions in Archivo Médico de Camagüey journal, which is the main way of publication of the professionals in the province. The groups of basic biomedical and surgical specialties present the best publication indexes, with 2.45 and 1.78, respectively. Among the basic specialties, internal medicine has the highest number on publications, 573, and the best index, 2.31; whereas comprehensive general medicine has the lowest index, with 0.20. In the surgical specialties the best index corresponds to Angiology and Vascular Surgery, 3.44. As regards the stomatological specialties, Maxillofacial Surgery shows the best index, with 3.27. Intensive Care and Emergency with a reduced number of professionals, 14 in all, are the most outstanding in the group of clinical specialties. Human Anatomy and Pathological Anatomy show the best indexes in the group of basic biomedical and diagnostic specialties. The most prominent center is the provincial dental clinic, with an impressive index of publication of 9.78. Full professors with 29.62 present the best index when we analyze the teaching categories.
