Abstract

MORAS BRACERO, Fidel de Jesús et al. Impact of congenital and hereditary diseases on mortality in children younger than 1 year in Camagüey province. AMC [online]. 1999, vol.3, n.3. ISSN 1025-0255.

The obective of this work was to know the impact of congenital and hereditary diseases in children younger than 1 year. It was a descriptive, cross­sectional study of mortality due to these afections in Camaguey province from January, 1997 to Dicember 1996 carried out in Eduardo Agramonte Piña Provincial Pediatric Hospital. The universe of patiens was 200, 660 live­ birst residing in Camaguey province. The sample was method of study was divided into there periods of six years each one. The causes of death were divided into principal, associated and others. The variables were: total of live -birth, death causes, place of death and municipality of residence. Data were obtained from the statistics provincial Department of the Healt Provincial Administration. The math operations were performed based on ratts by 1,000 live­births and porcentaje estimates? the analysis was done through Chi­Square Test. Results are presented in tables. As final results of study: The Infant Mortality Rate decreased from one period to another, with a higher relevance from the first to the second one where the lowering was of 4, 82 to 3, 00deceased by 1, 000 live­births. The main cause, with 587 deceased was the first place. The Pediatric Hospitalhad the highert nomber of decease with 52, 2 % of the cases. In seven Municpalities of the Province there were total rates in years over the provincial mean which was of 3, 43. Concluding there was gradual lowering of the Mortality Rate in the child younger than 1 year deu to congenital and hereitary diseaces all over the there periods the study covered. The use of the Prenatal Diagnosis in 1985 and the improving in Mother­Child Program influenced in this lowering.
