Abstract

35 diagnostic cases of human leptospirosis in Esmeralda Municipality were studied. The study finished in Manuel Ascunce Domenech Hospital within the period from january 1 st , 1990 to december 31, 1995 as to the epidemiological and clinical aspects, including preventive measures and mortality concluding, the disease is more frequent in young males from rural areas working in agriculture, coming from Brasil, Esmeralda, and Jiquí. The main findings in symtomatology were cephalea, myalgias and shivering, while fever, tachycardia and conjunctival sufusion were the most relevant signs. The final months of the yera and the initial ones were those of higher incidence associated with meteorological conditions and to sugar cane activities. Leptospirosis pomona and icterohemorragic are cited as the most important circulating groups.
