Abstract

Twenty eight cases primary esophageal carcinoma excluding adenocarcinomas of the cardia and fundus were collected between 1990 and 2000 in hospitals Manuel Ascunce Domenech, Amalia Simoni and Madame Curie of the city of Camagüey, Cuba. The average time interval from onset of symptoms to diagnosis was two to eight months. Most patients were male; 55 64 years (67, 9%). White skin was the predominant color in 60, 7% of patients;75% drank alcoholic beverages daily; while 22 (78, 6%) were from urban areas. 21, 4% had previous precancerous lesions. 92, 8% of patients had dysphagia at the time of diagnosis; other important weight loss symptoms were 87, %, 67, 8% regurgitation and chest pain 50%. The diagnostic sensitivity was similar for imaging and endoscopy, but it was 100% for endoscopy, biopsy, and cytology combination.
