Abstract

ALFONSO PUENTES, Nidia; PEREZ GARCIA, Angel; PENA BORROTO, Dayli D  and  ALFONSO PUENTES, Ramiro. Atenolol in the prevention of the hemodynamic response of laringoscopy and tracheal intubation in hypertension. AMC [online]. 2004, vol.8, n.4, pp.53-63. ISSN 1025-0255.

A prospective study was carried out in light hypertensive patients without treatment, with the aim of determining the effectiveness of atenolol in unique dosis, in the prevention of the hemodynamic response of laryngoscopy and tracheal intubation. The research was performed at Manuel Ascunce Domenech Provincial Hospital from December 2001 to December 2002. Two groups were formed through a simple randomized system, each of them composed of fifty patients: Group I (control), groups II (atenolol) orally 90 min. before surgery. Patients who received atenolol, required lower dosis of narcotics, arterial blood pressure and cardiac frequency did non complicated patients prevailed in this group (88 %); electrocardiographic disorders were significant in the control group. The atenolol resulted in a simple, effective, safe, and low cost alternative for attenuating the response to tracheal intubation in hypertensive patients
