Abstract
PILA PEREZ, Rafael et al. Pancreatic cancer in Camagüey. AMC [online]. 2005, vol.9, n.2, pp. 60-73. ISSN 1025-0255.
A cross-section and descriptive study of 119 pancreatic cancer patients was conducted at the Manuel Ascunce, Amalia Simoni, and Mme Curie hospitals, City of Camagüey, from January 1, 1990 to January 1, 2002, to assess the prevalence of such an illness in our milieu. Diagnosis was based on the histopathology study of deceased patients, and of patients who underwent surgery. The illness prevailed among white, urban district male patients over 60. General syndrome, icterus, epigastric pain, and itch were the most common signs and symptoms. Ultrasound scanning, computerized tomography, and pancreatic gammography, were the prevailing diagnostic tests whereas laparoscopy and laparotmy proved invaluable in hard-to-diagnose cases. Possible ethyologic factors and chance diseases are described.
