MONTES DE OCA MEGIAS, Elizabeth; CALZADO BEGUE, Dominga and SARDINAS MONTES DE OCA, Odalis. Smoking habit: Clinic epidemiologic incidence of smoking habit among a community cared for by a family physician. AMC [online]. 2005, vol.9, n.4, pp. 32-41. ISSN 1025-0255.
A cross-sectional study was conducted from October 2001 to June 2002 to assess the clinic epidemiologic incidence of smoking habit among the El Corojo Community, Municipality of San Antonio del Sur, being cared for by a family physician. Data were gathered by polling 115 registered smokers. The interview involved variables as chosen and designed by experts in the field. As it turned out, the 40-49 age groups prevailed (32, 17 %), and so did males (70, 43 %), habit onset prevailed among ages 10 to 19 (71, 30 %). Moderate habit incidence was 53, 85 % whereas the rate of family background as a motivational factor was 51, 30 %. Smoking was associated to coffee consumption 75, 65 %, to a sedentary lifestyle (17, 40 %) and to high blood pressure (17, 13 %).
