Acute respiratory diseases (chiefly pneumonia) rank among the top five causes of death among children. Although pneumonia is the main cause of death, it is complications that account for death. To assess pneumonia-caused complications among children, a descriptive study was conducted targeting males and females aged o to 14 who were admitted to the Eduardo Agramonte Piña Hospital of Camagüey, from January 1999 to December 2000. Of 3470 patients who made the universe were chosen for simple aletory sampling, 694 were left for the sample. Multivariable assessment pointed to statically significant associations among complications and aging, timeline from symptom onset to previous diagnosis and antimicrobial treatment (p<0.05). The highest complication rates were reached by pleurisy (14, 7 %), atelectasis (3, 7 %) and acute respiratory insufficiency (1, 3 %), whereas the highest rates of nonpulmonary diseases were reached by sepsis (5, 3 %) and paralitic ileus (1, 7 %). Planning an analytic study to establish links among variables proved necessary.
