Abstract

SANCHEZ MIRANDA, Deybis. Molecular Basais for sepsis. AMC [online]. 2006, vol.10, n.4, pp.132-143. ISSN 1025-0255.

Not only is sepsis a major cause for morbility but also the main cause for mortality in the patient under a critical condition. Septic shock is characterized by a number of symptoms and signs that include fever or hypothermia, leuchocytosis or leucopenia, tachycardia and tachypnea. It is an extremely complex process that leads to multiple failures of organs and to death. At present, septic shock is considered to be a syndrome of systemic inflammatory response due to infection through microorganisms. Standard therapy for the sepsis patient includes antibiotics together with aggressive back-up measures. Recent advancements in the field of immunology in conjunction with a better understanding of the physiopathology of sepsis have resulted in new treatments such as the use of antibodies against endotoxine and other mediators of sepsis, such as cytokines (TNF2 IL-1) and drugs against noncytokine mediators. Despite aggressive treatment, septic shock still represents a major health care problem and causes substantial morbility and mortality.
