Abstract

A cross- sectional descriptive study to know the morbilethality of the patients submitted to mechanical artificial ventilation, entered in the intensive care unit at “Amalia Simoni" Surgical-Clinical Teaching Hospital of Camagüey, was conducted. The universe of the event was constituted by the patients that received mechanical artificial ventilation from January 2002 to December 2004. The studied variables were the age, the sex, the initial diagnosis that motivated the ventilation, the most frequent complications and the lethality of the aired patient. The age group older than 70 years dominated with 32.7% of the patients, as well as the female sex. The cerebrovascular illness (25.5%) and the complicated postoperatory (15.9%) were the main causes to start the ventilation; the associated pneumonia to the ventilation was the main complication with 82.7%. The lethality of the aired patient was about a 45%.
