Abstract

Background: Different types of cancer that may happen in the stomach exist and the most common is gastric adenocarcinoma. Objective: To describe the behavior of patients with diagnosis of gastric adenocarcinoma. Method: An observational descriptive study in three hospitals of Camagüey province from the year 2002 to 2006 was performed. The universe was constituted by all the patients discharged from hospital with diagnosis of gastric adenocarcinoma as primary lesion. The taken sample belonged to 89 patients, obtained through the simple random method. Results: The disease prevailed in the masculine sex and in the age group between 56 and 76 years, the asthenia, anorexia and the loss of weight were the symptoms most revealed, an endoscopy to 96% of the sick persons was carried out, at the moment of the diagnosis, the 50% already had metastasis. Conclusions: The frequency increased departing from 55 years, 6 out of 10 patients presented high digestive bleeding and 8 out of 10 patients the cancer was located between the body and the antrum pyloricum what allows the planning of the surgical interventions without losing individuality.
