Abstract

Background: Sexually transmitted infections constitute an important danger for human health, these cause health problems in all ages and the adolescence represents the most vulnerable group. Objective: To determine and to modify the level of knowledge about sexually transmitted infections in a group of adolescents of Barrio Adentro in the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela and on this base to create an instruction program and promotion to modify their attitudes in the face of sexual life. Method: An investigation action study in a group of adolescents of San José del Peru Neighborhood, in Heres municipality of the Bolívar state was performed, from January to July 2007. A survey was applied before and after subjecting them to an intervention system where they were offered information on the most frequent sexually transmitted infections. Results: It was significantly increased the information on the sexually transmitted infections, the doctor pointed out as the main via of information. It was achieved that a bigger number of adolescents recognized the characteristics of the most frequent sexually transmitted infections as well as its infection forms and they identified in a bigger percent the appropriate measures to prevent them. Conclusions: A significant increment was achieved in the cognitive level of the adolescents on these infections, it was demonstrated the effectiveness of the fulfilled labour and the effectiveness of Barrio Adentro mission as working in health promotion in the neediest sectors of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela.
