Abstract

Background: biosecurity represents a vital component of the system of quality warranty, it is a doctrine guided to achieve attitudes and behaviors that reduce worker's risk of acquiring infections in the labor environment. Objective: to elevate the knowledge level on biosecurity in health workers at the Hospital of Santa Cruz del Sur. Method: an educational intervention on biosecurity in health workers of the Hospital Enrique Santiesteban Báez was carried out from January 1st to September 30, 2008. The universe was conformed by four-hundred eighty-three workers, was took a sample of one-hundred-twelve workers selected through a simple random sampling to those a questionnaire were applied. Results: it was evidenced that before receiving the educational works appropriate knowledge existed on what biosecurity is, universal cautions, diseases that may contract if they do not fulfilled the biological security measures and what it should be made before an accident with a piercing short object used in a HIV/AIDS patient. On the contrary of knowledge level about legislations in use, which was low. Conclusions: after applying the intervention a significant increase of knowledge was achieved in workers on biosecurity, for what was considered effective the intervention.
