Abstract

TARTABULL POUTRIEL, Kiopper; NICOLAU PESTANA, Elizabeth; BAEZ MEDINA, Rene  and  CULAY PEREZ, Alexis. Vulnerable plaque: new horizons in its diagnosis and treatment. AMC [online]. 2011, vol.15, n.5, pp.899-916. ISSN 1025-0255.

Background: cardiovascular diseases cause half of all deaths in developed countries and 25 % in those who are developing, it is expected for 2020 they will cause 25 million deaths annually. Objective: to deepen knowledge on advances in diagnosis and treatment of vulnerable plaque. Development: a bibliographic review on the subject was performed. EBSCO and HINARI databases were used, also, the articles from the journal Archivos de Cardiología de México. Researches carried out in the field of cell and molecular biology may deepen knowledge on physiopathology of vascular events and open up new prospects with regard to their treatment. These studies play a fundamental role to endothelial dysfunction and inflammation as responsible for the onset and progression of atherosclerotic disease processes. In recent years with the advancement of technology in diagnostic means, studies which detected vulnerable plaques with high risk for the development of acute vascular diseases and inflammatory activity may be performed.

Keywords : PLAQUE, ATHEROSCLEROTIC; VASCULAR DESEASES [diagnosis]; CELL BILOGY; REVIEW LITERATURE AS TOPIC.
