Abstract

ABSTRACT Background: the increase of life expectancy and the demand of better social and health services are a challenge for the knowledge society. Objective: to educate families for the management of dependent aged people. Methods: a pre-experimental study was carried out in a group of old people caregivers´ at the Old People´s Home of Pinar del Rio municipality from January to December 2012. The universe was consisted of 40 aged people and their caregivers; the sample was made up of 38 of them who comply with the inclusion criteria. An initial and final survey was applied to them to verify the impact of the educational intervention. Results: the majority of patients assessed belonged to the second (2) functional level, male sex, to the group of 65 years or older patients prevailed, hypertension was the most frequent associated disease, women were the caregivers par excellence, the totality of caregivers had inadequate knowledge before the educational intervention. Conclusions: it is feasible and essential to educate families for the management of dependent aged people.
