Background: dengue fever is a feverish disease caused by the virus with the same name and transmitted by the Aedes aegypti mosquito that is a problem in a worldwide scale. Objective: to update the health staff about this disease, its vector and the main prevention and control steps. Methods: this bibliographic review was made by means of Scielo repository and the data base Pubmed using the words dengue, severe dengue, dengue prevention, Aedes aegypti. Thirty articles from Scielo and 60 from Pubmed were chosen to be analyzed for the word dengue; 20 articles from Scielo and 30 from Pubmed for the word combination severe dengue; 5 articles from Scielo and 15 from Pubmed for the word combination dengue prevention; and 2 articles from Scielo and 38 from Pubmed for the word combination Aedes aegypti. Those 200 references were analyzed to check which one would be useful for the achievement of the objective of the article, choosing the references that appear. Development: the ecological triad of dengue fever is tackled, as well as its physiopathology, classification, clinical manifestations, detection techniques of the virus, and health control in Cuba. Besides, the results of the application of strategies for eliminating the larval and adult form of Aedes aegypti mosquito, the experiments searching for a dengue fever vaccine and the importance of health education, are mentioned. Conclusions: dengue fever is a disease that can only be eliminated with the participation of the whole society and the governments.
