Authors present references review about Coleus (Plecthranthus). We refer isolated compunds and pharmacological activities credited and corroborated for some species of gendre. We in form on Plecthranthus amboinicus (Lour.) Spreng, knowed in our country as French origan and traditionally used in catarrhal infections, its cultivation and harvesting, chemical components, popular uses and preclinical studies performed. To date, results obtained allow us to predict a wide utilization of this species in development of Herbal Drugs, prescribed in catarrhal infections and in cases of epilepsy. We used Medline database (1966/1998), NAPRALERT (1995), International Pharmaceutical Abstracts (1970/1993), and Chemical Abstracts (1998).
