Abstract

A descriptive and cross-sectional study of 145 patients with leptospirosis, admitted in "Dr. Juan Bruno Zayas Alfonso" Teaching General Hospital in Santiago de Cuba during the 2005 was carried out. The disease was more frequent in the male sex (85,5%) and the age group from 15 to 54 years. The highest incidence rate for 100 000 inhabitants was registered in II Frente municipality (29,0) and the largest number of cases (64) in Santiago de Cuba municipality. Only 21 patients were included in the risk occupational categories(agricultural and cattle activities).The clinical manifestations consisted in fever, migraine and arthromyalgias. The severely-ill patients had lung, heart, hepatic and renal complications.
