Abstract
PEREZ DIAZ, Leonardo. Glaucoma: main health problem in members of the Blind National Association in San tiago de Cuba. MEDISAN [online]. 2009, vol.13, n.2, pp. 0-0. ISSN 1029-3019.
A descriptive, cross-sectional and retrospective study of 1 797 members of the Blind National Association in Santiago de Cuba was carried out, from February, 2004 to September, 2008, to determine the main ocular disorders in them. Glaucoma was diagnosed in more than 30% of the members, in whom the evaluation included family pathological background, precise treatment, period of time between the diagnosis and the loss of vision in one or both eyes as well as the knowledge on ophthalmopathy and the economic cost of therapy for affected people. It was found that glaucoma was the main health problem in the membership of the Association, so it was recommended to enlarge the number of inhabitants under study to specify the state of ocular health in the city residents, keeping in mind that the number of people with blindness can increase as a consequence of an increase in life expectancy.
