Abstract
FERNANDEZ VILLALON, Migdalia and NOVAS MONCADA, Leonardo. Sepsis in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit of the Teaching Southern Children Hospital. MEDISAN [online]. 2009, vol.13, n.6, pp. 0-0. ISSN 1029-3019.
A descriptive, cross-sectional and prospective study of 469 patients admitted in the Polyvalent Intensive Care Unit of the Teaching Southern Children Hospital in Santiago de Cuba was carried out, from January to December, 2007, with a view to determine how the sepsis affected this children population from the clinical and epidemiological points of view. The information was obtained from the record books of the mentioned unit and from the corresponding medical records. Of the total of boys and girls hospitalized , 71 (15,1%) were affected by septic processes, of whom 8 died (11,3%): 1 due to severe sepsis (3,6%) and 7 due to septic shock (70,0%). It was confirmed again that the only measure to diminish the number of deaths for that cause is by means of the early and effective perfusion to eliminate the microvascular changes in the different anatomical organs.
