Abstract

SEGUEN HERNANDEZ, Jacqueline et al. Epidemiology of the decay in teenagers of a Venezuelan dentist's office. MEDISAN [online]. 2010, vol.14, n.1, pp. 0-0. ISSN 1029-3019.

A descriptive and cross-sectional study was carried out to identify risk factors that favored the occurrence of dental decay in 151 teenagers aged 12-14 years at Barrio Federación, from the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, from September 2005 to April 2006. Patients classified epidemiologically as sick predominated, as well as poor oral hygiene, previous experience of caries and cariogenic diet in descending order. The index of lost-filled-decayed teeth was similar as for sex and age, with slight increment by age 14 and in male patients. Most of the patients were considered of moderate risk for developing the condition. It was recommended to extend this research to different educational institutions and dental care centers linked to the family physicians of Mission Barrio Adentro.

Keywords : decay; teenagers; risk factors; oral hygiene; cariogenic diet; prevention of odontopathies; health promotion.
