Abstract

LOPEZ ESPINOSA, José Antonio. The first people from Santiago that worked in medicine as a science. MEDISAN [online]. 2010, vol.14, n.1, pp. 0-0. ISSN 1029-3019.

The biographical sketch of the first ten physicians from Santiago de Cuba, that worked in the science of diagnosing and treating the diseases by the end of the XVIII century and the first third of the XIX century are presented. Data that served as the source to make this reference work were taken basically from the Central Record of Havana University, as well as from the files of churches and parish churches where these people of the medicine practice born in Santiago were baptized. The few information found in those places was processed in the most suitable way to bring to light the names of these physicians, that should be known by the current and future generations of health professionals. This work, aimed at fulfilling that purpose, also tries to become itself as modest tribute to their memory.

Keywords : medicine history; medicine practice; medicine professionals; physicians from Santiago.
