Abstract

An intervention study was carried out in all the pregnants whose newborn had a low-birth weight, assisted at "Tamara Bunke Bider" Northern Maternal Hospital in Santiago de Cuba, from September, 2005 to February, 2006, with the purpose of identifying the risk factors that resulted in the low birth weight, as well as making known the role played by the nursing staff in these cases. Mothers younger than 20 years, the unfavorable obstetric history and the maternal disease prevailed in the case material as favorable conditions for the preterm childbirth. The specialized nursing care decreased the occurrence of complications in the neonatal period.
