Abstract

GOLA CABRERA, María Clotilde. Effectiveness of hatha yoga in the elderly. MEDISAN [online]. 2011, vol.15, n.5, pp.617-625. ISSN 1029-3019.

A phase II clinical trial was carried out in 30 elderly from "America Labadí Arce" Home for elderly in Santiago de Cuba, from September to December, 2006, aimed at evaluating the effectiveness of hatha yoga taking into account physical and psychic indicators. The results of the implementation of that technique revealed that it was more effective than the conventional physical exercises, as it was able to decrease hypertension and the body temperature, to increase functionality and to normalize mood (according to Yesavage´s scale of geriatric depression) in the elderly who practiced it, with psychic improvement in all the aged people.

Keywords : hatha yoga; elderly; effectiveness; conventional physical exercises; home for elderly.
