Abstract
RODRIGUEZ OLIVARES, Daritza C. Maternal mortality in Santiago de Cuba from 1998 to 2010. MEDISAN [online]. 2011, vol.15, n.10, pp. 1376-1383. ISSN 1029-3019.
A descriptive and cross-sectional study on maternal mortality was carried out in the province of Santiago de Cuba from 1998 to 2010 in 99 women, dead as a direct or indirect result of pregnancy, childbirth or postpartum, for which medical records, obstetric charts and medical death certificates were reviewed, as well as records of national discussions on maternal deaths and provincial registry of public health statistics. The historical trends of indicators in the last 13 years and their percentage distribution were analyzed. In the territory, deaths were commonly caused by massive blood loss attributable in most of cases to the ectopic pregnancy, and in general to inappropriate compliance with the protocols in the process of care for pregnant women, mainly in the municipalities of Santiago de Cuba, Palma Soriano and San Luis.
