Abstract

PADRO SUAREZ, Lissetti  and  PELEGRIN MARTINEZ, Antonio Ángel. Perimenopause and cardiovascular risk. MEDISAN [online]. 2011, vol.15, n.10, pp.1485-1492. ISSN 1029-3019.

The phenomenon known as menopause takes place in the woman between 45-55 years and is determined by a follicular ovarian failure. The incidence and prevalence of the cardiovascular disease are higher in man that in woman (in a relationship of 3:1) until the stage her menopause begins. Later on the difference decreases by an almost exponential increase of that cardiopathy in the females until equalling its presence in the 75 year-old men and exceeding it in those of 85; therefore, it seems probable that the hormonal deficit caused by the ovarian failure influences in a decisive way in that process, mainly when the menstruation has an early and definitive end.

Keywords : woman; menopause; menstruation; cardiovascular disease.
