Abstract

MARRERO RODRIGUEZ, Ernesto et al. Characterization of patients with keratoconus. MEDISAN [online]. 2011, vol.15, n.12, pp. 1698-1704. ISSN 1029-3019.

A descriptive and cross-sectional study was carried out in 17 patients who were diagnosed with bilateral keratoconus and attended at "Dr. Juan Bruno Zayas Alfonso" Ophthalmology Center of Santiago de Cuba from January to June 2011 in order to characterize them according to variables selected for the research (age, sex, uncorrected and corrected visual acuity, and clinical classification and main microscopic changes). It was confirmed that females aged 40-49 years were the most affected; moderate disease was the most common clinical classification; the main changes found by means of specular microscopy were decrease of keratocyte density, vertical striae, dark gaps and endotelium with normal cell count. It was found that through confocal optical microscopy corneal tissue alterations can be observed in living tissue.

Keywords : keratoconus; specular microscopy; confocal optical microscopy.
