Abstract

A descriptive and cross sectional study of 188 elderly, admitted in the Intensive Care Room of "Dr. Juan Bruno Zayas Alfonso" Teaching General Hospital in Santiago de Cuba was carried out during the 2012, in order to characterize them according to variables of interest. Female sex, the age group 60-74 and the surgical diseases prevailed in the case material. Forty seven aged patients required invasive mechanical ventilation (35.0%), of which 33 died (70.0%). The short stay in the unit was related to the highest number of alive patients
