Abstract

The conceptual map is a tool that has shown a great utility to achieve the self- directed learning as a strategy to guide the students to learn and organize the learning materials. The objective of this paper was to present some conceptual maps of Disaster Medicine as a strategy in the significant teaching-learning process of this discipline. Five conceptual maps were done with the help of Microsoft Office Publisher 2007, based on basic texts of Disaster Medicine taking into account that there is not a defined conceptual map to any topic; the level of hierarchy of the concepts was organized according to the importance that is established and identified among them. Some relations, among all the different concepts of Medicine of Disaster by means of connectors that allowed to shape a “real value” about the topic, were also established; integrating the new and old knowledge. Examples of some conceptual maps were presented, with a great utility as a scheme   resource, revealing all the system of contents and the object of study of the subject Disaster Medicine, likewise the relationships that are produced. The utility of the conceptual map, as a way of study to the learning of the Disaster Medicine subject, was designed, just advantaging the reading, accompanied or not by techniques such as the underlining of summaries, that used to become in an exercise of copying and sticking.
