MONTERO CABRERA, Ibian Dahiana; GOMEZ VAZQUEZ, Yadnil Elizabeth  and  GONGORA GOMEZ, Onelis. Effectiveness of early stimulation in infants with risk of delayed psychomotor development. ccm [online]. 2020, vol.24, n.2, pp. 637-654.  Epub June 01, 2020. ISSN 1560-4381.

Introduction:

early intervention is first and foremost, a fundamental principle when it refers to the issue of childhood disability that implies prior initiation of actions to neutralize the consequences of the disease on functional capacity and maximize residual potentials.

Objective:

to determine effectiveness of early stimulation in infants at risk of delayed psychomotor development in the period from April 2018 to April 2019, at the Policlínico Universitario Docente Alex Urquiola, Holguín, Cuba.

Methods:

a quasi-experimental study with a control group was carried out. The universe was made up of all the cases attended in neurodevelopment consultation in the studied period; the sample was 20 cases with risk of delayed psychomotor development. The control group chosen included infants from three offices of the health area, number 11, 12 and 13, due to their proximity. The children were randomly selected considering that they had no risk factors.

Results:

50% of the infants in the experimental group had convulsions as a risk factor. In the experimental group the psychomotor development was satisfactory in 75%, 60%, 80% and 90% at 3, 6, 9 and 12 months respectively, while in the control group, the psychomotor development was satisfactory in 100% , 75%, 90% and 100% at 3, 6, 9 and 12 months respectively.

Conclusions:

early stimulation was effective in infants at risk of psychomotor retardation.

Keywords : psychomotor development; early stimulation; risk in psychomotor development.
