Abstract
DOMINGUEZ ALONSO, Emma; SEUC JO, Armando H; DIAZ DIAZ, Oscar and ALDANA PADILLA, Deysi. La carga de la diabetes en Cuba, período 1990-2005.. Rev Cubana Endocrinol [online]. 2008, vol.19, n.2. ISSN 1561-2953.
OBJECTIVE: to describe the burden of diabetes in Cuba from 1990 to 2005. METHODS: the mortality rates (x 100 000), the rates of years of potential life lost due to early mortality (x 1 000), the average years of potential life lost per each death, the rates of years of potential life lost due to morbidity (x 1 000), the rates of years of life adjusted by disability (x 1 000) and the proportion of the total burden corresponding to morbidity were calculated. The years of potential life lost as a result of early mortality were obtained from the estimates of life expectancy for five-year intervals of age, and from morbidity as the product of the severity, the incidence and the average duration of diabetes. The years of life adjusted by disability were calculated as the sum of the years of potential life lost due to mortality and morbidity. RESULTS: the rate of years of potential life lost because of early mortality decreased from 1990 to 2005 (from 2.44 to 1.98 x 1 000 in males and from 4.54 to 3.72 x 1 000 in females). The average years of potential life lost per death showed discreet changes (towards the increase in males and towards the reduction in females). Their rate due to morbidity increased during this period in both sexes. The rate of years of life adjusted by disability rose from 5.24 to 6.61 x 1 000 in males, and from 8.40 to 11.19 x 1 000 in females. Females were significantly affected. CONCLUSIONS: the integral diabetes burden grew in Cuba during the studied period at the expense of the morbidity burden.
