Abstract

The chemical quality of water employed for hemodialysis in 9 hospitals of the country which render this service to patients presenting with end chronic renal failure was assessed. The types of water and the most frequently used systems of water treatment in the country are represented in these hospitals. The chemical pollutans analyzed in the water were: aluminium, chlorine, copper, nitrates, zinc, calcium, lead, magnesium, sodium, and potassium. A method for the determination of aluminium in water was developed by atomic absorption spectrophotometry with electrothermic atomization. Results were assessed taking as reference the standards from the Association for the Progress of Medical Instruments of the United States of America (AAMI). Overall, waters having the worst quality and employed for hemodialysis were found to be the ones corresponding to effluents of softenings.
