SUMMARY By the stratified analysis it was possible to determine clusters of territories with similarities in the behaviour of diverse variables in order to contribute to the selection of sentinel sites for the surveillance and epidemiological research of significant health problems, to apply interventions according to the conditions of each stratum and to facilitate the planning and location of the resources. The method used was the cluster analysis. A group of demographic and socioeconomic variables (demographic density, type of community, main economic activity) were utilized in 2 stages: design of the hierarchical tree and the further conformation of the clusters. 4 territorial strata were delimited in the country, which were basically detemined by the demographical density, the variable related to the type of community and the economic activity predominating in each territory. This clustering will allow to apply other analyses of the behavior of diseases and damages, as well as sampling designs on the basis of determined strata.
