Abstract
GARCIA ROCHE, René G. et al. Family influence on tobacco smoking in adolescents. Rev Cubana Hig Epidemiol [online]. 2008, vol.46, n.3, pp. 0-0. ISSN 1561-3003.
The adolescent is exposed to risk factors as smoking, in which the family plays a very significant role. This paper describes the family influence on smoking in adolescents aged 15-19, within the framework of the II National Survey of Risk Factors of Non-Communicable Diseases done in Cuba in 2001. 1 915 adolescents from 8 847 families were interviewed. Percentages and odds ratios with 95 % of confidence intervals (CI) were calculated. Life prevalence and the present smoking habit in adolescents were 12.7 % and 9.0 %, respectively. Male adolescents smoke more (11.5 %) than females (6.3 %). The family history of smoking significantly influences on the tobacco consumption among female adolescents, although the present proportion of Cuban adolescents consuming tobacco is lower than in other periods and in other countries.
