Abstract

INTRODUCTION: Theory and experience gained show that community interventions in non-communicable diseases must to be planned, carried out and to assessed according to clear standards and principles and that there must to exist a cooperation with all community sectors. METHODS: An assessment methodology was designed to identify the advances and to improve the performance of community interventions in three municipalities of our country (Cienfuegos, Yaguajay and Centro Habana) for intervention and control of non-communicable diseases. Assessment was carried out in terms of reinvestments, process and products. RESULTS:During 2003-2005 in three municipalities there was a reorientation of health services to prevention of non-communicable diseases and its risk factors by equipping of 16 medical consulting rooms, the creation of 11 clinics for quit smoking and the carrying out of 352 prevention activities of health promoters and with a proper use of funds to prevention aims. CONCLUSIONS: The community intervention processes for prevention and control of risk factors and non-communicable diseases in the three municipalities has been different, however, the three community intervention coincides at to promote and to supply the organized, arranged and compromised social participation of the citizenship to strengthen a health culture regarding its cultural, generation and of genre diversity and the achievement of practices aimed to a healthy life and environment.
