Abstract

BARBON PEREZ, Olga Gloria. Medical English approached from a linguistic perspective in the context of collaboration in health. Rev Cubana Hig Epidemiol [online]. 2011, vol.49, n.3, pp. 482-489. ISSN 1561-3003.

The article aims at analyzing medical English from a linguistic perspective. This analysis is seen as a starting point to develop the communicative competence of Cuban health collaborators in English speaking countries. It is concluded that medical English legitimate uses act as a social marker. Efficiency or its absence in the use of communicative functions indicates the degree of development of the communicative competence, specially the pragmatic competence in the health collaboration context. Medical English particularities, merges as a complex linguistic variety with plural uses that deserve to be considered in the communicative conception.

Keywords : Linguistics; medical English; communicative competence.
