Abstract

MARTINEZ COUCE, María Margarita et al. Propofol as a sedative in urological endoscopy. Rev Ciencias Médicas [online]. 2007, vol.11, n.1, pp. 35-44. ISSN 1561-3194.

The ambulatory surgery is applied every day, more because of its advantages, the selection of the anesthetic in this type of surgery is based on parameters providing for security to the patient for his/her soon recovery, so Diprivan 1% or Propofol is the choice anesthetic agent. The effectiveness of the drug in the ambulatory urological surgery, the fast recovery of the patient, his/her well-being and the diminishing of complications were assessed. A prospective study was done with 100 male patients who were admitted at "Leon Cuervo Rubio" General Hospital in Pinar del Río for ambulatory surgery cytoscopies from October 2005 to September 2006. The sample was divided into 2 groups of 50 patients, chosen at ramdom. Both groups were prescribed Diazepam 0,5 mg/kg. weight and atropine 0.5 Mg. endovenously; group 1 was sedated with Phentanyl, 2 mg/Kg. weight, and group 2 with propofol 1mg/Kg. weight. Positive results were achieved in group 2 since the beginning and the recovery were immediate and uneventful. It was demonstrated that the use of propofol is beneficial in the urological ambulatory surgery, because of patients' soon recovery, amnesia of undesirable episodes, and no complications, so patients are discharged from hospital really soon.
